The ability of Phi Delta Phi to conduct its operations requires revenue beyond that which is generated through alumni dues and initiation fees. Bequests are not only an easy way to give back to your fraternity and its future members, it is a significant way to leave a lasting legacy by which your fraternity brothers and sisters can remember you. A will should be a final message reflecting your ethical and personal values, and a way of leaving a last legacy for an organization that has meant so much to your brothers and sisters as well as the legal profession as a whole. Bequests can be made by preparing a new will or adding a codicil to your present will with the advice of your attorney and/or other advisors.SAMPLE LANGUAGE FOR CHARITABLE BEQUESTS: The following provides some suggested methods and wording for remembering Phi Delta Phi in your will.
Specific Bequest: "I give $_________________ (or a percentage of my estate) to The International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, a not for profit professional association located in Washington, DC."

Residuary Bequest: "I give all (or a percentage) or the remainder of my estate to the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, a not for profit professional association located in Washington, DC."
DESIGNATIONS: Restricted Bequest: This bequest specifies how you what the funds to be used. For example, you may wish to designate your bequest for a student scholarship, an grant to a specific Inn, or a specific ethics program. If this is your wish, please don't hesitate to call our Executive Director, Tim Wheat, at 800 368-5606 to ensure that your goals in this regard may be fulfilled.
Honorary or Memorial Bequest: This is a gift that honors or is a memorial to a person. We are pleased to honor your request and have many ways to grant appropriate recognition.
Endowed Bequest: This bequest requires Phi Delta Phi to perserve the bequeathed corpus permanently while using the investment income generated. In such a manner, your gift will continue to give indefinitely. As an example, the late Lloyd G. Balfour's generosity enables Phi Delta Phi to grant at least twelve major scholarship awards to deserving Phi Delta Phi students each year.
Sample language might read: "I give (amount, description of asset, percentage of estate, remainder, etc.) to the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, a not for profit professional association located in Washington, DC for the purpose of establishing the ______________ Endowed Scholarship Fund. Phi Delta Phi will distribute only the earnings from the fund as specified by this request."
