The Fourth National Convention of the Fraternity, meeting in Chicago, Illinois, June 1895, recommended amending the Fraternity Constitution to permit the installation of a Canadian chapter.Responding favorably to the recommendation, Phi Delta Phi chartered the first Canadian chapter at the Law School of Upper Canada in Toronto, Ontario on January 4, 1896. The Inn was named after John Osgoode, the first Chief Justice of Upper Canada from 1794 to 1801.
Since that time, 10 additional Inns have been chartered across Canada; the country has provided 3 of Phi Delta Phi's 48 International Presidents. Phi Delta Phi is the only active legal Fraternity in Canada, with its membership including Justices from the Supreme Court of Canada, and the appellate Courts; leading Barristers; and notable political leaders.
